The Southland features an
extensive community college system, a number of universities and a wide range
of public and private schools located in each community. The Southland has the
largest number of community colleges within any region of Chicago. Five
community colleges provide a major bridge for secondary school grads to
four-year universities. They enjoy nearly a fifty percent adult student
population each year.
No other region better enjoys the extensive partnership between business and
community colleges than does the Southland. From highly technical classes to
industrial and even logistics training courses, our community colleges often
have the very solution you seek for your business or career.
Major workforce development programs including centers for business on campus
exist in all of our institutions of higher learning. The Chicago Southland
Chamber of Commerce can guide you to the outstanding resources available to
help your business train and grow. Public and private four-year and graduate
universities are strong community assets and significant business partners for
the region.

Multiple school districts for each community provide local learning
environments for students in their hometown. There is an extensive array of
both public and private schooling in the region. New residents will find strong
local involvement in their community schools. Many of our high schools enjoy
national reputations for academics and, at the same time, provide vocational
preparation for jobs through active vocation programming. Manageable schools
with heavy community involvement provide young students with safe and enduring
experiences to learn and build their futures.
The institutions of higher learning serving the Southland include the
following. Descriptions of each institution are drawn from the resources of the
South Metropolitan Regional Higher Education Consortium.
